Little black things

Little black things

Firstly, please could anyone ID this large-ish beetle I came across on a low hill above Dalmally?

Secondly, there were thousands and thousands of millipedes on the Southern Upland Way between Innerleithen and Galashiels last month. And I thought it was supposed to a relatively quiet trail  No ID required, but thought it was interesting - big population boom going on? I used to see lots of them in my childhood, but not so much nowadays.

It's a rove beetle, but which one needs more research. There are literally hundreds of species in the UK and thousands worldwide.

Guessing that the millipedes are Tachypodoilus niger the White-legged millipede. Weather conditions have been beneficial for them this year so a boom in numbers may be occurring.
