Egg loving Pine Marten

Egg loving Pine Marten

Summer is a great time to see Pine Marten during daylight hours. This one is regular like clockwork 7 pm - 8 pm.
I buy cheap eggs and it just goes away and stashes them for later. This one is a male as I saw his rear end.
Near Elgin.

Great shots DavidM.

The first time I saw a pine marten take an egg I was surprised just how far it can open its mouth.

Wonderful shots. We rented a cottage where there were reputed to be pine martens, didn't see any, so feeling very guilty at corrupting them by giving them human food, put out a crust. Didn't see any. Then we read the visitors book and realised that the previous people had put out a whole jar of jam and a dozen eggs. We did similar, on a smaller scale and the pine martens appeared that very night. They DO look very small to be able to trot off with a whole egg, we thought they would break them and eat them there and then, but not at all.

The 'problem' with pine martens(and many other animals too) is in the wild they are elusive creatures and rarely seen. In places where food is provided a sighting gets close to guaranteed.

In nearly 40 years of visiting NW Scotland a few times every year I have seen only two pine martens in the wild, and each sighting was for seconds only. In places I know where food is provided, sightings were almost daily(or usually more often, nightly)
