Little egrets in August

Little egrets in August

Postby denfinella » Fri Dec 03, 2021 10:40 pm

We saw these little egrets (I think?) at the mouth of the River Wansbeck in Northumberland back in August - only just getting around to sorting through the photos.

According to the RSPB website, they're usually only winter visitors north of The Wash - not sure what they were doing all the way up beyond Newcastle!

We have a resident pair on the west side of Wolverhampton that seem to have successfully produced a brood of 2 this year. They're still about now.

They're lovely birds to see, very elegant.

A few years ago, they were a rare sight, and mostly in southern estuaries. Now they have spread successfully across most of the country. The bird guides generally haven't quite kept up.

There are several that appear to live in Scotland. See them often at Aberlady Bay on the East coast, Ardmore Point near Helensburgh and Fairlie, near Largs on the West Coast

These are great birds to see. Ayrshire now a hotspot. Almost guaranteed on the mudflats at Fairlie/Hunterston. Even regulars at the stinking rocks Barassie.

Even regulars at the stinking rocks Barassie.

I wonder if that's the same ones that are in the Pow burn, between Royal Troon and Old Prestwick GC's?.
