Hi
In response to walk aboot's question..... It's a Woodcock because of it's general shape, size, colour and markings. Woodcock is bulkier than a snipe or Jack Snipe (this bird is bulky). Woodcock has a darker belly with barring as Snipe have whiter belly with no barring (this can be seen in David Ferguson's picture above). Woodcock doesn't have a white trailing edge to the secondary feathers as Snipe & Jack Snipe do. The colour of the legs....Snipe has greenish legs, this bird has pinkish legs....like a woodcock. The under wing pattern is that of a Woodcock. There are more subtle differences between Woodcock and Snipe, but I won't bore you with that.
Hope that helps.
Mark
