Could anyone help with the identification of these birds that I've photographed on walks

Dunno 1 and 2, but 3 looks like a drowning pigeon. 4 is a merganser [a kind of fish-eating duck], 5 looks like a young chaffinch, 6 is an eagle, whether Golden or Sea Eagle I'm not sure. 7 may be a buzzard, or a kite. Or a marsh-harrier having a spazzy.

Thanks for your help Caberfeidh

Think you might have hit on something . These bird books and websites show how to recognise birds perching and flying, but never drowning or having a spazzy.

1 - Wigeon
2 - Little Grebe
3 - juvenile moorhen
4 - merganser
5 - juvenile dunnock
6 - Golden eagle
7 - Not sure, I'd guess at a buzzard

Generally I agree with KatTai, except:-
1. Really difficult - looks a bit widgeony, but that white underside seems to extend rather high up the side...? Need a real ornithologist's input, methinks..
5. Not a Dunnock, I think: more like a chiff chaff, perhaps juvenile.

Agree with Kat Tai, but think 5 could be an immature Northern Wheatear. Agree 7 is most probably a Buzzard and the merganser is the female of the species.

I thought 4 was a female Goosander...how can you tell the difference?

I think it's a Goosander too: there is a clear-cut division between brown and white extending right around the front of the neck.

I agree with most of the suggestions:

1. Wigeon
2. Little Grebe
3. Moorhen
4. Female Goosander (due to contrast between head and neck)
5. quite dumpy so I am leaning towards juv Wheatear or juv Stonechat
6. Golden Eagle
7 Common Buzzard

Correction - female Goosander. Still go with Wheatear though. :D
