Mrs Kingfisher

Mrs Kingfisher

Postby Mal Grey » Sat Dec 09, 2017 12:44 am

After years of following kingfishers along rivers and canals in the canoe, trying to get close enough to get a photo, I finally found one a couple of weeks ago that was hungry enough to carry on fishing rather when I gently drifted close. Got within about 15 feet I guess, for 5 minutes. Sadly the light was really low, as it was dusk, so the ISO was a bit high and the pictures a little "noisy/grainy", but I'm pretty pleased to have got them, and been able to watch her so closely. I missed the two dives she made completely, far too fast!

I say "she" as research has taught me to remember that its Mrs Kingfisher, not Mr, if she "has her lippy on" - the lower bill being orange on the female rather than being black top and bottom on the male. I like it.

Lovely feathered friend you have there, Mal....we've had daily visits for the last 2 months from a pair of azure kingfishers here on the other side of the earth, 5 or 6 quick 'kek kek keks' announcing their wearabouts....no hope in capturing them with a wide angle lens though.
Such a beautiful bird.

Absolutely gorgeous. Definitely one of my favourite birds.

And I've learned something I didn't know about distinguishing male and female

That's good fortune
Even with a telephoto you need to get reasonably close to get a decent photo :!:
Always pleasing to get a special one 8) I've never managed to see a kingfisher in the wild :(
