Sexton Beetles with a dead slow worm

Sexton Beetles with a dead slow worm

On the long walk out from Lurgh Mhor and Bidein a'Choire Sheasgaich this afternoon, I came across this odd sight, a frantic scene of activity (well, the beetles were frantically active; the dead slow worm less so):

I didn't know they were Common Sexton beetles until I googled the description a few minutes ago - It actually looked like they were trying to eat the recently-dead slow worn from the inside, beetles were at either end, partially inside the corpse (they'd come out and moved on from there by the time I took photos). There was a lump half way down the body that I half thought might be an adventurous beetle who'd made it all the way in and was still excavating its way through ... but having watched the scene for a few minutes, the lump didn't seem to be moving so probably not!
