Woodcock most likely.

I'd hazard a guess at Snipe.

Poor thing, its in a right mess, from the pictures it could be either a snipe or a woodcock, but a woodcocks eyes are set further back I think so maybe a snipe, difficult to tell from the pictures.

Also wingspan for a woodcock would be around 2 foot, compared with just over half of that for a snipe (so 12-15 inches?).

Thanks folks - it's definitely one or t'other. Shame we'll never know how it ended up in City centre garden.

I would say that from the bill shape, it's definitely a woodcock. I also found a rather tatty one a few years ago, and it had a proportionately shorter and very slightly downward-curving bill.

If David Main views this thread, I'm sure he can give us the definitive view :) .

Woodcock. A Snipe has a slender bill and sharp ended wing feathers.
A Lot of migrant woodcock from eastern europe land in Cities exhausted and die.

Woodcock - favourite prey of urban Peregrines, taking them at night.
