Can anyone help with a bird ID from the top of Culter Fell earlier this month please? I think it's a golden plover (in its less striking, winter plumage), but it would be good to have a better informed opinion.
Sorry the photo's a bit grainy - it kept us company for quite a while, but kept a fair distance away.

Yup, Golden Plover, they can sound very eerie on the hills in the mist with their wailing call!

I once went all the way to Hermaness at the far end of Unst, Shetland where I saw my first Golden Plover. It actually drew attention to itself with its piteous 'follow me, I'm hurt' call, otherwise I might not have noticed it. I did follow, because it was obviously trying to draw me away from its nest or young, the whereabouts of which I did not know. I was naturally very happy to oblige by 'falling' for the ruse and letting it lead me away.
Then only two or three weeks later, I was parked up at Danby Beacon, North Yorkshire - a little bit closer to home - and another one walked right past the car.
*&^!.
