Pink footed geese

Pink footed geese

Postby Tringa » Wed Sep 18, 2019 4:33 pm

I was walking through Nairn around 9:30 this morning and about saw 70 pink footed geese in a typical wandering skein.

Just a great indication of the change of the seasons.

Spotted half a dozen skeins heading south over the Glen Clova hills on Sunday, struggling quite a bit to maintain formation in the gusty winds.

Can imagine them struggling against gusty winds, though pink feet often seem to fly in a constantly moving and undulating skein. Reminds me of scribbly writing.

Think they're somewhat like team pursuit cyclists, constantly swapping the lead each taking its turn at the sharp end.

Love them, one of nature's great joys.

Good analogy. Agree they are a joy to see and hear. Their call is, to me, evocative of wide open spaces.

Yes, a lovely sound. They seem to call to each other almost continuously, and you often hear them before you can see them.
