Rob Roy and William M'Gregor (of Balhaldie) were both Jacobites.

Robert Rollock and William Milligan were both moderators of the Church of Scotland, but at very different times.

Neither anywhere near.

Both RR and WM were born 19th century and died 20th century.

Robert Rhind and and William McBeath were both Glasgow footballers at the turn of the century.

Neither of those two, and not looking for footballers.

RR at one time worked in Ramsgate, while the better known WM got the BRB, that should set the hares running!

I keep looking at this and trying to come to it from different angles. Is 'hares running' a clue?

"the hares running", was just a reference to your fingers running over the keyboards seeking the answers, not a clue as such. But in fact RR and WM might have been interested in stopping hare coursing if it was illegal.

Anyone worked out what a BRB is? It was very popular at the time, in Sgurr's line of business....and a different one each week.

William Mckenzie and Robert Rendell were both Orcadian Writers. The latter could possibly have been visited Margate as he was in the navy, but spent most of his time in Orkney. I have no clue about BRB unless it is Best Book Recommendation (can't find a reference to it, so probably wrong).

Could this be the police detective William Merrilees, who wrote The Short Arm of the Law? No idea who RR might be though.

I think you may be right as the BRB would be appearing on "This is Your Life" - the Big Red Book.

Yes, you have got half of it. WM is indeed William Merrilees, and BRB is the Big Red Book, from Eamon Andrews, but WM got to be a bit more than a detective, which might bring you to the link with RR, a very Scottish name with one *R quite prominent at the moment.

Roderick Ross CVO CBE KPM (24 May 1865 – 6 March 1943) was Chief Constable of Edinburgh City Police from 1900 to 1935. So they had being Chief Constable in common. He had previously been Chief Constable in Margate Better to give it to 1/2M 1/2T as he really cracked it.
