Map Brain Teaser

Map Brain Teaser

Postby Tinto63 » Tue Mar 30, 2021 5:59 pm

Looking at an old Ordnance Survey map today I found information in the margin that I hadn't noticed before:

Can you tell me the scale of the map and the units used and which of these three choices is correct:

a) 1= 99.396

b) 1= 99.639

c) 1= 99.936

further clues to come if necessary

No idea I’m afraid - I’ve just popped into the loft to look for my old maps and I can’t find them. So I will be intrigued to see the answers unfold (see what I did there)

No takers as yet, but always pleased when Tim takes an interest. As a map is involved you would be correct in assuming that units of area are involved.

I looked at my oldest OS maps but couldn’t see anything so guess they aren’t old enough. So we are looking at areas rather than a distance scale?

On a 1:25000 scale map, 1 square inch = 99.639 acres

Others may already know about this... but while thinking around this thread, I came across this.

https://maps.nls.uk/os/index.html

If you haven't seen it already, take a look. It is marvellous.

Take a look, for example, at https://maps.nls.uk/view/189662065

Thanks so much Tinto for putting me onto this idea. Ah, many happy hours of browsing ahead. My wife will be furious.

An excellent resource!

A favourite of mine is the old 1inch map of Fisherfield (e.g. https://maps.nls.uk/view/91549075) - see what the highest contours are on Beinn a' Chlaidheimh, A' Mhaighdean and Ruadh Stac Mor!

I came across them a few years ago when preparing a planning application in Leicestershire. I was surprised to find that whilst I am based in the middle of England the easiest records to access were held by the National Library of Scotland. They are a great resource.

I thought that jmarkb would be the first to get this correct, and I'm glad that this has created some interest. The NLS maps are a great resource, but I still like to collect old paper maps. The one I took this information from was 1:25,000 first series sheet NT16 Balerno, which appears to have been first published in 1955, but my copy must be a reprint as the major roads have been revised 1971. So just 50 years old - incidentally the same age as our daughter who was born in 1971!

Oh, and I did do the calculation to make sure the map was correct.

I will have another completely different old map topic which I hope to put on this thread in a couple of days but please add your own contributions.

Thanks for the puzzle, Keith, that was fun! I needed the area clue, but then had a happy time testing out the plausible units and scales! I don't remember ever seeing a 1:25k map with a grey cover like that.

I’ve not seen the grey covers, but I have quite a lot of blue ones, somewhere in the loft - I used to use them a lot when I started to do walks in my teens. Later on I used to travel down to London with work, and near our office in Holborn was an OS shop with new green ones - very exciting!

A selection of maps that are representative of my historical collection of maps (no grey covers though). Most of these came from my parents collection. I love old maps, particularly the colours
