West Highlands, a childhood haunt of a Scottish author.

Looks a bit similar, but no. I'd say they were off the beaten track....

If that's a clue, I'm not getting it. Not sure of the specific waterfall but does it relate to any of these?

1. Ardnamurchan (Alasdair MacLean)?

2. Daviot/Slochd (Alistair MacLean)? Not exactly West, I know.

3. Inchnadamph/Glas Bheinn (Andrew Greig/Norman McCaig)?

No.

There is a bit of forest in the pic. If you want to lodge a complaint, mount a campaign. A road builder lived nearby in darkness, but ironically no road goes there. Definitely off the beaten track...

Is your author in question John MacKay and the waterfall in Letterewe perhaps?

Should I change my answer to Ian Flemming (author) and the falls of the Allt Toag, Glen Kinglass instead?

The author was George MacDonald Fraser, you'll have to read the Complete MacAuslan to figure it out...

I've read all the MacAuslan stories and I'm none the wiser. Who's the lucky winner then?

Nobody has won yet ~ dig out the book, read one of the last stories, when they ended up getting mixed up with deer poaching and an illicit still on his aunt's estate...

And everyone else, your homework is to get your hands on a copy of "The Complete MacAuslan" by George MacDonald Fraser and read it from cover to cover. It is an education in itself, mainly about the Gordon Highlanders in the Second World War and afterwards, but about the background to the political situation in the Middle East too. Funny and Educational; two for the price of one, at all good bookshops now!
