OK a couple of clues:
1 The picture was taken recently while walking along a stage of a Long Distance Walking Route
2 In the distance are some buildings, one of which I blanked out as the large signage would have given the game away to those using Google, or to a certain group of enthusiasts

Another clue:
After taking the above photo I continued along the Long Distance Walking Route and within one to two minutes took the following picture:

I think you are on the John Muir Way and the canal is the Union canal but I am not sure where! Somewhere near Falkirk?

Getting close but no cigar.
You are correct about the John Muir Way, but not about the Union canal - in fact the first picture is not of a canal at all.
The picture was taken about 8 miles from the centre of Falkirk in a place that is now part of Falkirk Local Authority area but was historically in another county.

Yes, I may have got it earlier if you had left it in although it is many years since I was last on one of their trains. We took the children there, then the grandchildren and also visited the mine when it was still open. I did think there was something funny about the "lock" gates but thought it was a backwater of the main canal rather than not the canal at all!.
This is from my more recent history (very recent). No railway stations have been harmed in this photo which remains untouched by editing, although I was tempted to remove the hill tracks.
