I have no idea so I'll try to narrow it down. Are you within about 8 miles south or west of Hawick? I've yet to see a Borders summit that doesn't have a fence running through it, so I have doubts!

Your thinking is right regarding the borders. As regards Hawick, this area is E of Hawick. The photo is not actually a summit but actually is on route to a summit of a Donald outlier.

Looking north from the Penine Way, about a mile east of Windy Gyle?

Correct, about 1.4 mile down from Windy Gyle, the border fence is about 100 feet behind me.

Clue: there is an unusual feature in the photo, which may help pin down the location

Is it looking at the cliffs of Sgorr Dubh, across Coire Gorm, with the slabs in the foreground. With a longer lens than I'd first guessed as I couldn't work out what the slope on the left was, but it may be Meallan an Laoigh.

Spot on

Yes - the slabs are seen end-on and they look much less extensive from this viewpoint than from further up the valley. The slope on the left, as much as I can remember it, is just the east side of the valley, above the Abhainn Loch an Nid. Will have to dig out that set of photos sometime, and check!

Over to you!
