The village is at the bottom of a long valley with the main road through heading up to an old religious piece of rock.

Cant believe no one has got this, it is one of those little stream crossing points of note. The Fell above it is saintly and the village in the Dale is?

my guess is Patterdale. The sainty fell is St Sunday Crag. The old religios rock is the Kirk Stone. The dog is a Patterdale Terrier.

Yes Holly correct on all three counts. The stream crossing is just out of Patterdale village from the public WC's path heading for St. Sunday Crag.
