Can I have a 'P' please Bob - Scotland

Ground-breaking work by Mary Slessor on Poison Guilt. She persuaded the African tribes people with whom she was working to give up the idea of trial by poison. Namely, if you drink it and survive, the bad spirits are helping you. If it kills you, you are innocent. Same idea as the Scottish Witch trials. I know this probably is wrong, as it will be engineering or science, or some such.

Mary Somerville published the first English textbook on Physical Geography.

Despite a really impressive answer from Sgurr that fitted the clue perfectly, it was Mary Somerville’s “ground breaking” Physical Geography, in use as a the definitive standard textbook for nearly sixty years, that I was thinking of.

Coincidentally, both Mary Slessor and Mary Somerville have featured on bank notes.

Over to you CharlesT!

That was quicker than I thought. Was it that easy?

Most agree that Heather Reid (aka Heather the Weather) captured Reporting Weather probably not, as you would probably have said Weather Reporting....but who knows).

Not Heather the Weather I'm afraid - but if she had been reporting on weather conditions for RW, she would have said

"Below zero temperatures, lots of ice, low cloud and fog, poor visibility. Nice weather for winter sports!"

Henry Raeburn captured the reverend Robert Walker - The Skating Minister. Shouldn't have needed the Margaritta MacDonald clue.

By the way, I should have explained that my “most agree” bit was alluding to the recent dispute about who painted The Skating Minister. I think it has now been settled that it was indeed Raeburn. The Moncrieff portrait hangs next to it (well it did last time I was there...)

Anyway CharlesT, well done, over to you!

No wonder my researches into Arctic and Antarctic explorers didn't pay off. Should have realised you would probably have said "claimed" rather than "captured" the odd bits of territory round there.

A visit to MW would of itself not be sufficient to restore equilibrium.
