Thanks!

Unexpected arrival of a M in E led to F becoming (reputedly) an unlikely home for RH

Extra clue: In E, RH said he was called AH He had worked with another AH, although at times it had been a struggle.

No guesses yet - maybe these clues will help raise interest in this one...

M is a brand name, internationally known, but probably much better known in my parents’ generation (I am 56) than recently. There were several well known types of M, a later one being a “first” in its field.

E is a place. It is an Outstanding Conservation Area - that is nothing to do with the subject of the puzzle, but it might help you guess the location

F is also a location. It was on the OPG (again, that’s not related to the subject of this puzzle). It is the start point for Munro routes listed on this website.

As I mentioned, there is uncertainty about RH at F. Officially, RH was in Abergavenny in south Wales at the relevant time.

Oops, when will I learn to type! In the above there is a typo - I meant to say OPL

Never mind, here are some pictures (in random order) that may help guess what/who are M, E, F and RH

Correction. Of course that is a ME 262 Sturmvogel, but Hess flew to Scotland in a ME Bf110....

... and the F is Floors Farm...

Yes. M is Messerschmitt, in Hess's case a Bf110, and on the Blue Oyster Cult album, a 262 - the world's first production jet aircraft. I often think that the overall design of jet aeroplanes has changed surprisingly little since the 262.

Hess landed in Eaglesham, and you are right about Floors Farm, although I was thinking about his reputed stay in Fersit, on the Old Puggy Line, and the start of routes up the Loch Treig munros. A house there was (allegedly) used as an SO interrogation centre. Officially he was never there, and stayed for most of the war in Monmouthshire, where the locals nicknamed him "the Kaiser of Abergavenny".

The Duke of Hamilton, who I didn't mention, was also an interesting figure in aviation - one of the first people to fly over Everest. I also mentioned two AHs - when arrested in Eaglesham, Hess said his name was Albrecht Horn. Hess had in the past edited Mein Kampf (my struggle) by Adolf Hitler.

Over to you!

Thanks Tim, I was doing something completely different when I looked at your clues and hurriedly put down what I could remember, as I haven't been getting much of a look in recently. My favourite Messerschmitts were the bubble cars with tandem seats in the 1950s-60s, there used to be one in occasional use in Edinburgh.

Now try this one: BA was a SB.

Plenty of clues to follow.

Thanks Tinto63 - you got all the key elements anyway!

I will try and have a go at BA and SB...

Time for the first clue: BA was a SB is just a statement of fact, but to most users of this website would appear to be an oxymoron. Hope that helps.

\OK. I'm sure this is wrong, but let's have a go Beinn Alligin was a Superb beast. An oxymoron as its name means mountain of beauty.

Not Beinn Alligin was a Superb Beast, but part of it is on the right lines. Another clue: BA was built by D.

The Bank of Airdrie was a Savings Bank built by Davidson, but I can't imagine you would come up with anything so obscure....so I guess the D in question is not an architect but an owner?

Not the Bank of Airdrie, but I might come up with something just as obscure, but not this time.

The D I mentioned was a company based at (another clue) P.

Well spotted Tim, absolutely spot on. The next clue was going to be designed by PD (Peter Drummond) and so on. Ben Alder had a rather sad end, after withdrawal in 1953, and the last Small Ben in service, it was earmarked for preservation, but eventually scrapped in 1967 because it was not in 'original condition'. I believe that there are moves to build a replica, so if you have a million+ to spare from that lottery win...

Over to you.

Thanks Tinto63!

Yes, a shame it was scrapped!

I was always intrigued by a rumour of a steam train still hidden in an outbuilding at the Dalmunzie hotel which was apparently from a “stalking railway” on the southern slopes of Glas Tulaichean.

Groundbreaking work by MS on PG
