They have to have a Scottish element, be that a place, a person or a thing and those may be real, fictional or mythical. They may also pre-date the formation of Scotland as a political entity.

If insanity (or lunacy as it was known then) is your affliction then this is the place to come to be cured. Merely drinking the water from the well is not sufficient though – the afflicted should be bound, then thrown from a boat and towed round the island three times clockwise.

Correct, though my version has the afflicted one rowed around the island three times and submerged three times in the process. Apparently the well ran dry after someone attempted to cure their mad dog by having it drink from the well. St Maelrhuba was of royal Irish blood and founded a monastery at Applecross.
