Thanks Charles - good luck with the house move and come back soon.

I'm breaking protocol with this one and not giving a starter but giving every letter

This high spot comes from a Manila gunman

Well, as no-one else seems to want to play, Mam na Gualainn.

Still packing, but I needed a rest. :(

Thanks EE, old crossword solvers never die.

Now it was at RC that BA played a diabolical game and troubled folk no more.

Hmmm? Second clue not worked this time, so here's a third.

In gaelic BA would be AM and fully AMmaR.

Someone has to get it soon - I'm incommunicado from 2nd April for a week.

So, another clue. In current times RC is HC and comprises two fine houses of the type referred to by its current name.

I don't know any Gaelic Assyrians, purple or otherwise!

There was a Wolf of Badenoch, I believe, but he seems to have been Alexander Stewart...

You are partly there. Alexander Stewart, Lord Buchan was known as Big Alexander, more properly Alasdair Mor mac an Righ and the Wolf of Badenoch. He might have worn purple and gold for all we know. Anyway, he was a bad lot and reputedly met his come-uppence at RC after losing a game of chess to a tall dark stranger. What is RC?

Aaaarrrrr, Ruthven Castle, where the evil Wolf of Badenoch is reputed to have played chess with the Devil himself ! His body was found blackened and burnt, with the nails of his boots blasted out, and terrible storms accompanied his funeral as he descended to the Gates of Hell !!! OK, let's not get carried away, but what a man for Gravity !

Aye, a man for your heart if not your soul. He was pretty useless at anything but rape, pillage and arson (burning Elgin Cathedral in a fit of pique!). Reputedly the funeral storms abated when his coffin was moved to the back of the procession. He lies in Dunkeld Cathedral or in Hell, take your pick.

Over to you.

Well I remember as a boy I shone a torch through the hole broken in the stone lid of his sarcophagus at Dunkeld, and there was nothing there but sweetie-wrappers, so he aint in Dunkeld !!!

Talking of bedevilment, which B.C. does legend tell was host to a laird who coveted riches so much that he reputedly sold his soul to the devil?
