Very ingenious, but no. I think Paisley gave the pattern its name, not the pattern Paisley...but I may be mistaken.

The name goes "Given(Christian) name P surname"

P is incredibly versatile and for a while brightened up life.

But is this James "Paraffin" Young of Glasgow, the discovery of paraffin, and his part in the world's first oil refinery in Bathgate?

PS CharlesT, if you are taking a look at all, I noticed your earlier reference to the Illiad. My daughter carries it everywhere: it is by far her favourite book.

Can't get all of it but I believe we have HM Antisubmarine Experimental Establishment at Fairlie and Harbour Defence System?, ASDIC and SONAR. Is the A Arran? Relocated from Portland during the second world war.

Yes!

It is the Hawkcraig Admiralty Experimental Establishment Station near Aberdour in Fife. Remains can still be seen on the headland near Silver Sands beach.

It was set up in 1915 to develop Hydrophones, later called ASDIC and now SONAR - see http://www.scotlandswar.co.uk/HMS%20Tarlair%20Book.pdf. One of the scientists working at Hawkcraig was Rutherford of splitting the atom fame.

Thanks for the poem recommendation - she has several translations and retellings of Homer so I'm sure she will enjoy it. In the middle of mock A levels right now but will look for it after that!

Visits to MF have increased substantially in recent years. Don't worry about senility Charles. We turned down a birthday card yesterday which went something like "Golfer 1 'Did you see where it went' Golfer 2 'Yes, but I've forgotten' ......on the grounds that it might upset the recipient. Don't think you are there yet, and hope I'm not.
