Your Favourite Views Thread

Postby Mal Grey » Mon Mar 30, 2020 12:29 pm

Thought it would be nice to have a place full of beautiful views. As far as I'm concerned, anything vaguely hill, coastal or generally outdoors is fine by me, but obviously Highland views ought to be the core. Variety is, though, the spice of life!

I reserve the right to post more than one favourite later when I change my mind! :D

I'll start with one from my favourite part of the world, Inverpolly. There are dozens of amazing views here, but on our canoe crossing of the area last Easter, we found this little hill right in the middle, surrounded by those magical hills, a spot few walkers will get to. I'm already cheating by having two photos, just to try to demonstrate how good a spot this was!

One of my favourites was this view from the top of Ben Starav

For me these fall into two categories: the once in a blue moon views; and the forever views.

As a once in a blue moon view, I've never forgotten this one taken in May 2014 looking west from the A82 across Rannoch Moor to the Black Mounth hills.

As to forever views...
- Almost any view of the Cuillins, but especially from Sgurr na Stri, and Blaven
- The iconic view of Liathach that greets one as one rounds one of the many curves of the single track A896...
IMG_0280.JPG
A poor pic, but one that is full of wonderful memories for me.
- Most of the views looking generally down and to the West from A' Mhaighdean
- The views of Beinn Dearg Mor from the high point of the walk out to Shenevall, or from An Teallach
- The first sight of The Cobbler as one crests the path where it heaves into view...

And so so many more. I could go on for ever if I don't stop now...

Not Scotland of course, but brings back fine memories. Cerro Torre on the left, Mt Fitzroy on the right, Patagonia. Digital transfer from a somewhat faded print.

Sadly, I'm terrible with heights so I mostly have to admire the mountains from below, but that's no hardship when the views are like this! This is Beinn Eighe from Loch Clair, taken in February 2018, simply snapped on my mobile.

Thanks for sharing these, exactly what I hoped for.

Here's one from the track to Camasunary.

So hard to choose!

A few that I've seen several times and always look forward to on these walks -

Looking east from the top of Sgurr Mor, Beinn Alligin:

The moment on Canisp where Suilven, thus far hidden, suddenly bursts into view:

Looking north from Ben Mor Coigach:

and probably my (so far!) once-in-a-lifetime favourite, in Greenland: Image

Superb! There are some great views from small hills out on the north-west coast. Meall an Fheadain above Polbain is also terrific, as is Meall nam Meallan next to Mellon Udrigle:

Glad I started this now, some wonderful views indeed.

As first posts go, you couldn't go far wrong with those choices! I particularly love the one from the Quiraing path, and the one from AnAirdMor, where the scattered rocks and pools seem to balance the scattered isles in the background.

One of those stand-and-stare moments was coming out onto the SE ridge of Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair from the cold corrie below and making our way up to the summit with these utterly astonishing shimmering white views of the back of the Torridons in one direction, the most remote Fisherfield hills in the middle, and the browner sun-touched slopes of An Teallach in the other. That's a summit with some views!
