I think you might call it my scattergun approach.
JA was ab early adopter of C

Can I just clarify that "ab" is correct or is it meant to be "an"

We don't use C for that purpose any more, but it was all the rage at the time.

My first thought was C for chloroform, but can't find a JA to go with it.

Not chloroform...but I hoped you would think it could be. We now use DP instead

So it's a medical thing?

No, it's not a medical thing. We use DP instead of the non chloroform (original) C

Could this be about photography?
James Adamson was an early adopter of calotype, and we now use digital photography?

Nearly spot on. My memory was jogged by getting the answer on the Muirs who lived in our house built by Thomas Rodger, who also used calotype originally. However it was JOHN, not JAMES. A slip of transcription I assume. He was another local as far as I am concerned. I could fill my entire portion of the quiz with them, but it would become too easy. Have already done Gregory of the meridian.

Yes I botched that answer a bit. There does seem to have been an early photographer James Adamson but not linked with calotype.
On the assumption I'm not disqualified :) I'll continue with:

A D changed D to M, which in a different context was associated with violent conflict

Scattergun approach. A Doctor (don't know who) changed death to murder???? Possibly in the contest of Burke and Hare, but probably not.

Nope, nothing to do with doctors or murder for dissection purposes

A DUKE (of Sutherland) changed his family seat from DUNROBIN to MERTOUN (in the Scottish Borders)??????. The only later violence I can find was a family quarrel in the Scotts who represented Harden Roxburgh and mertoun in parliament.

No, not that. The violent conflict referred to (which culminated in a beheading) related to M in another context from the meaning within the puzzle, a clue for which is:

"The fowk o' this place wud ca' their vera tykes aifter the Y o' [no hints as to the next word]. This is fat we had ees't to ca' the 'Main Street' - D Street; fat sorra ither."
