Thanks Tim, I can only think that I came home before everyone else!

Things have to be at a low ebb for you to reach SA, full of myth and history but robbed of its Ss

I guess it is a tidal island, Is it Sanday, and its scholars have gone?

Tides are relevant and it is on an island but whilst it has probably been visited by scholars, they are not relevant here.

I'm struggling with this one too, but I think you are getting Sts Adomnan and Columba mixed up. Adomnan is later and is now most remembered for his hagiography of Columba.

You are , of course, right. I was so sure I knew that I didn't bother checking. Back to the drawing board aka Wikipedia. Anyway it doesn't fit the clues which imply it is a place (though it could be a book?)

None of the S s are the same. The change in name involves a change of language with the one of the words retaining the same meaning but the other having a completely different meaning.

Apologies for lack of clues and feedback. I have had intermittemt power and internet connection since travelling to and from Harris last week. Would have made no difference if I stayed at home as I came home to same plus smashed up chicken coops and a neighbouring shed that is threatening to invade (currently no neighbours as place is to go on the market and agents in charge). Fortunately no chickens were hurt (stopped keeping them when neighbouring property was emptied of my resident chicken sitters last year). NB these things have survived all previous storms including Storm Arwen.
Some clues.
SA is referred to by the now favoured name SC on a walk described on Walkhighlands. I have long nursed an ambition to go with the flow and visit but I would like to see the former name restored as the latter was popularised by Victorian tourists and ignores the legend that gave the destination its original name.

Close (although not that close geographically speaking) but last time I visited Smoo Cave it was not on an island.
