Well done. Merkland Street, which was a subject of this quiz a couple of years back, is no more, replaced by Partick. The system was opened in 1896, one year after a year which Sgurr mentioned earlier. The stations were renamed in 1977.

Thanks!

In the following puzzle only the underlined are Scottish (though there could be some doubt about PSOL):

In 1959 there were changes: 1863 became 1880, POL became PSOL, A became AM and H became E

Although most of the events occur in I and the COTE, the beginning is at EC and the ending is at the OC

Is this about the Journey to the 1959 "Centre of the Earth" Hollywood film production in which one film location was Edinburgh Castle? Professor Otto Lidenbrock is POL in the book and that is about as far as I have got.

Finally... OC = Old College quad which I find is mentioned as one of the Edinburgh locations for the film.

PS in my earlier reply read 1863 and 1880 for the years.!

Correct in all respects!
One of my favourite films. It opens with a pipe band marching out of Edinburgh Castle; it then marches around Professor Sir Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason), engrossed in reading a newspaper, at the top of the Mound.
Most of the extras in the closing scene at the Old College were students at Edinburgh University.

Over to you!

Thank-you. I saw the film as a child and I think was read the book by my parents but was not a fan of the tale. Last week, though, I was decorating and listening to its dramatisation on the radio. With it fresh in my mind COTE jumped out at me and I then googled the film (but got the more recent one initially so came to a dead end until I realised there had been a modern version). Wikipedia then gave me everything excpet the OC detail which required a little more digging.

Older still in many ways than the Glasgow underground and 1959 films, PG became known as TAD and was, by all accounts (some true and some maybe not so true) a great survivor.

Another soubriquet for PG could have been TLJ.

Peter Grant, The Last Jacobite, aka The Auld Dubrach was a survivor of Culloden, living to be 110. Escaping from prison before his probable execution, he eventually returned to a normal life.

Correct. Dubrach being the place of his birth (circa 1714) on the south side of the River Dee between the Linn of Dee and White Bridge.

Over to you. Charles.

The Hjaltadans stone circle on Fetlar is said to be frozen Trows (trolls) who only came out at night. They loved music and were playing so hard they failed to notice the sun coming up and became frozen in situ. Only uncovered this because of your known interests of stone circles and folklore! Reading an account of a walk there it appears that Bonxies abound so beware.
