Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

Could this be Scotland's 1978 World Cup campaign?
1 goal scored against Peru, 1 against Iran, 3 against Netherlands
AA= Ally's Army
A=Argentina
And of course hubris as expectations were not met! I remember it well...:(

Correct. I tried to engineer getting the song in, but couldn't get it without the words. Son aged 9 was taken in by all the ballyhoo and daughter and I KNEW it was rubbish, and we couldn't bear to watch his disappointment, so we went to Falkland Youth Hostel leaving him with his dad. Then a field trip of secondary kids came in, and they had refused to come unless they could bring a portable black and white TV. So we climbed West Lomond and came back to find everyone writhing on the floor in agony. Your turn.

Thanks. A bitter disappointment - one of the best teams we ever had...

D(GM) was the first D at BE, followed by B(KS) and then several others

Good guess but no.
In fact, the LM is not in Scotland; it is in ME.

Dwalin was the first Dwarf at Bag End, followed by Balin and several others, and the Lonely Mountain is in Middle Earth?

I may well be far from the mark as I have no idea about GM or KS and I don’t know the Scottish connection!

Graham McTavish and Ken Stott are 2 Scottish actors who played them in film adaptations- I googled Dwalin and Balin as I am not a fan of Tolkein put off by many people assuming that Lord of the Rings was where my parents took my name from... it was not.

Yes, HMHT and Rohan collectively have the answer. Graham McTavish played Dwalin and Ken Stott played Balin in 'An Unexpected Journey', the first part of The Hobbit trilogy...

Is it now in my power to name the victor who sets the next puzzle? If so it's a difficult decision. HMHT made the crucial breakthrough regarding what the puzzle was about but missed the key element, ie the Scottish connection, which was supplied by Rohan.
So I'll toss a coin: Heads HMHT, Tails Rohan,
...and the result is: Tails... over to Rohan!

I am passing it to HMHT as he did all the heavy lifting.

Bagpipe Reveille! Can't think of anything less musical than that!

Not the answer! - But regardless of musical preferences, I think a bagpipe reveille would be quite a wake up call...

especially if performed by Korn...
