Can I have a "P" please Bob - Scotland (2nd edition)

It was rohan who gave me the idea. I had been thinking it was place names mentioned on WH, and suspected it was something to do with Gaelic mutations, which I know nothing about, so I was about to give up!

THO is land-based and doesn't travel. TA travels a lot, overseas. But despite that, there's a strong connection between them - what is it?

Tim

Clue - many of THO's attainments have been in Scotland. TA has achieved more internationally.

Extra clue - in the puzzle itself, I was speaking metaphorically. But in the Clue, I am speaking factually.

Extra extra clue - there is one word in the puzzle itself, which is a very clear hint about the subject matter of this one!

Took a punt on 'strong' being the clue, and hey presto - strongman brothers Luke Stoltman and Tom Stoltman, respectively know as The Highland Oak and The Albatross.

Well done, plus a personal thanks and sigh of relief from me. Now I do not have to do a picture clue to illustrate people doing strong things... without showing people doing strong things...

Appropriate to the rooted nature of an oak, Luke's successes have been mostly UK, including 5 times Scotland's Strongest Man. Younger brother Tom, in keeping with the wandering nature of an albatross, has had more success overseas. In Sacramento USA last year he won World's Strongest Man - the first Scot to achieve this.

over to you!

WD was responsible for, among other things, the DW, a rare sight nowadays.

WD was also WD&S. Besides the aforementioned DW, they were also responsible for the HT, also known as a ST. This was so successful in its field that the much larger, non-Scottish, MH took it on board.

MH should really be M-H and is (was) Canadian. There's a big hint to the subject matter in the previous clue.

I think I've made this too niche.

There are examples of WD&S work at the NMORL (formerly MOSCL) situated close by to their place of origin.

NMORL =National Museum of Rural Life and some type of tractor ... Fordson? Wallis? but I can't find any connection with Scotland. Some other farm machinery?

I'm guessing you're in the field of tractors, ho ho! As my knowledge of such is too small to measure I'll leave it to someone else to find the answer.

Rohan is getting close. As a reward, here is a clue as to one of WD's products.

Google searches reveal William Dickie and sons (WD&S)and the manufacture of wind pumps at East Kilbride. Antique versions on display at NMoRL. They made other rural implements as well. Sorry I could probably find the rest but have to get on with other stuff. Not an areaI know much about.

Well done, DW was the 'Dickie Windmill' (or windpump as it should be called) which used to proliferate over the farming landscape, and ST was the Swath Turner or Hay Turner, which impressed Canadian manufacturer Massey-Harris (MH) so much that they started making it in partnership. William Dickie incidentally was a distant relative of mine, and my mum worked in their office for a time when she left school.

Fascinating family connection but also as you say a niche area of expertise. I'll need time to ponder another puzzle, I'll be back later this evening.
