FS has been applied to many but JG was one of the earliest.

No idea about FS or JG, but I totally agree re Alistair MacLean!

Other FS include GO.

Graeme Obree was christened the Flying Scotsman. Am I on the right track, as it were? 😁

Well done. JG is Hawick motorcycle racer Jimmie Guthrie.

I proclaim Charles the winner - over to you.

Thank you, I would never have found the latter,. Every Google search for Flying Scotsman (howsoever framed) produced reams of information on some locomotive, seemingly the only thing the Google gnomes considered of interest.

Any easy one for Advent.

MBMF has been unjustly denigrated.

Misrepresented by a later English pensman for political purposes, the real story is far more interesting and complicated than that portrayed.

To be strictly correct I should have written MBmF, if that helps.

In English it would just M.

Say not in luvvie circles.

Mac Bethad mac Findlaích; , or in English, Macbeth. Couldn't agree with you more since I read a book whose title I have now forgotten.

Yes, Shakespeare always seems to err on the side of pleasing the incumbent ruler. In this case James VI and I, purportedly a descendant of Malcolm III via the Bruce and Stewart lines.

Given Macbeth ruled, more or less peacefully, for 17 years, a long period for those times, I think he has been grossly misrepresented. All Holinshead's fault for pursuing fiction over fact. Nothing changes eh?

Your go.

One of the first real antiquarian books we got in our shop was a Holinshead, but alas it was lacking a title page and an early partner took it with her (probably grossly over-valued) as part of her settlement when we bought her out. She later went on to run Titles in The Turl in Oxford, which you may have come across in your part of the world with husband after the job he went south for packed up, so we never had to have that incipient row over pricing (her sky high and me dirt cheap) that would have ripped us apart.

Will start thinking.
