Mark McManus played JimTaggart , Mike Moran (English) wrote No Mean City sung by Maggie Bell ( Scottish) the theme tune to the series.

Correct!
No Mean City, a great song that served as the theme tune to the classic TV series Taggart, with the late Mark McManus superb in the original title role. The next clue would have been: JT(MM) was succeeded by MJ(JM) and then by MB(AN)!

Your go...

Thanks, your polis clue immediately gave me Jim Taggart and Mark McManus but it took a little more work to exclude writers/directors etc before I realised that it was about the theme tune.

Now this

Whoops, I wasn't notified of your very quick (and totally correct) reply. Came on to give a clue and none is needed. Over to you.

I am surprised that nobody has got this so far, given that one set of initials has been very much in the news lately with a subsidiary mention or two of one of the others.. Maybe you are all out climbing hills.

Politics?

My knowledge of current affairs is even worse than that of obscure mathematical notebooks. :(

The only political news that I can think of is the G7 but can't think why it would be this. I maybe far off the mark but I thought it was food or fiction based but can't remember any news that would fit those themes either. .

PP, Prince Philip? I can't think who he adored and didn't follow the extensive coverage.
