I'm afraid you're way off beam there. My recent clue should help quite a lot. Finding HCT will lead to ML.

Another clue then. The monument referenced has a colloquial name arising from its shape.

The monument must be "The Pencil" at Largs, commemorating the 1263 battle

HCT can only come up with Hunterston Coal Terminal, in the vicinity of Largs I suppose

ML not sure - perhaps Mean Low in terms of tides?

Yes, the answer starting to look a bit weak... :?

You got "The Pencil" bit right, but the other parts not.
So, somewhere in the vicinity of Largs is where to look.

Correct! And I didn't have to use my "Maid of Norway" clue, which is good as the two were unrelated.
Your go.

The Pneumatic Tyre was invented by Robert William Thomson, developed into production by John Boyd Dunlop.

Pneumatic Tyre? Invented by John Boyd Dunlop of Dreghorn in Ayrshire, although he was living in Ireland at the time.

Sorry both. Although the Pneumatic Tyre was indeed a first, I had in mind something less useful.
