It's not American Mink, but you have inadvertently come very close to what AM achieved.

Is it Alexander McGillivray who was a prominent Creek (Indian) was in the Canadian fur trade as well as being a local leader and had a Scots father? If it isn't him, it could be Angus Macdonal CV lifted off the net " Angus MacDonald from the Isle of Skye entered the service of the HBC in 1838 and proved so skillful in obtaining Indian furs that in 1852 he was appointed head of the extensive Colville district, including all traditional posts north of Walla Walla,"

As susal your research is second to none but alas you are wrong in this instance.

AM was responsible for ET.

Still (sort of) in fur: Alexander Mackenzie was associated with the Hudson Bay Company before doing the first crossing of Canada..but I can't find any ETs so probably not him.

No, there's no American connection. Think upon ET, and something you mentioned in an earlier post.

No, not clocks, but timing is critical!

Was it the person who patented the colour changing egg timer? Not sure what that has to do with raising a glass though or who it might be.

No, but you're getting warm. In addition to the ET, AM may also have a claim to the EK.

Alan McMasters invented the first electric toaster? He might also have invented the electric kettle. Spent hours chasing after whisky in space. We had to raise a glass, because whisky was involved in the accident which lead to its discovery. Far-fetched clue or what? Had to follow the "getting warm" bit.

Well done. You mentioned toast (as in raising a glass) almost right away but got sidetracked across to the other side of the Atlantic.

Lessons from completing cryptic crosswords, use every bit of the clues given. I was sidetracked with GMT, when should have checked out toast as well. As ever Sgurr's persistence paid off.
