Wendy Alexander and ?TT were responsible for Labour's demise in Scotland. (I have tried leprosy, Latin, Lallans, and "lovers, Mary Queen of Scots")

Nope, nothing to do with Wendy Alexander/Labour (or any of the other Ls mentioned). Indeed no political construction can be applied to the solution.

William Adams and Thomas Telford were responsible for the demise of longshoremen

A plausible answer, but not the right one in this instance. However you are getting closer, with two out of the five words correct.
"etc" comprised TF, JP and many others.

I think this is an engineering question but I'm baffled by L.

L was in one respect mythical, but nevertheless had a regular connection with B and G

Are William and Thomas the two correct words, or have I by sheer chance hit on a correct surname as well? The only L mythical creature I can find turned out to be a water vole...which has diminished...but goodness knows why.

William and Thomas are correct

My forth clue:
WA and TT were generally styled SWA and STT; the former more well-known than the rather obscure TT, (In fact I could accept an answer that comprises WA and L only... )

My fifth clue:
L was way more fearsome than a water vole!

The only such L I know of is the Luideag of the Lochan of the Black Trout on Skye. Can't link it with a WA though.

If you can't solve this, Charles, we are doomed. All I can think it must be in some fictional work (book, film, play, poem, painting ???) about a made up scary thing or at least something more scary than a water vole, which is just about everything.

Most definitely no fiction involved here and nothing to do with the Lochan of the Black Trout - onsider my earlier clue that L was mythical 'in one respect'.

L's demise was relatively quick following the achievements of WA (or SWA - see my forth clue), and many many others. Her succesors did not have the same key quality, which would have been obvious to anyone in B or G looking on.

Hopefully you can now build a connection from these and all the previous clues to the solution

Sir William Arrol and Sir Thomas Tancred, contractors for building the Forth Bridge which opened in 1890, were instrumental in the demise of Leviathan, a ferry from Granton to Burntisland that ceased operating and was scrapped in 1892?

Well done 1/2 man and 1/2 T. Had got to Sir William Arrol, but could find neither a side-kick nor an L. Sure this must be it.

Absolutely correct HalfManHalfTitanium.!!
Leviathan carried railway wagons, hence it was no longer needed after the construction of the bridge, although passenger ferries continued on the Granton-Burntisland route for some time.

Over to you!
