NEW FEATURE - Gaelic pronunciation

NEW FEATURE - Gaelic pronunciation

Postby Paul Webster » Fri Jan 25, 2008 6:38 pm

Some of you may already have noticed, but we're now adding recordings of the correct pronunciation of placenames relevant to each walk, including their meanings.

Almost all walks in Skye, Kintail, Loch Ness, Torridon, Ullapool and the Cairngorms now have a pronunciation file you can listen too; Fort William will be done shortly.

Please let us know if you have any comments - do you find it useful ?!

This is a good idea, i‘ve found it impossible to learn gaelic mountain names from books. Just spent 20 minutes listening to the pronunciation of Scottish mountain and place names, mostly in the assynt area. Bit shocked to realise, after 25 years hill walking in Scotland how little i know, only got three words right ( Sgurr, Breac and Lael ).Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Excellent idea - sound is very different to how there are often spelt.

This feature is now all but complete; have added the pronunciations for the Cairngorms and Fort William areas over the last two days.

Hopefully now Bidean a'Choire Sheasgaich now makes sense to us all :D

Paul, great idea! Cameron McNeish's have pronounciations included in each description, although even thase, as I have found out, are subject to local dialect!! Does make you you look a bit daft, but tolerated for trying!!

I am born and bred Scottish and new to Highland walking and I am struggling to pronounce the loch & mountain names, which I am not comfortable with and I think that this idea is a basic fundamental for a site such as this and it is an excellent idea and I hope that it is expanded.

I always thought Cameron McNeish's pronunciation 'suggestions' looked and seemed to be quite a way off the mark... but them I'm definitely not an expert on Gaelic pronunciation! Was there ever a harder language! My idea of it is that, a word has to contain every consonant but then you mustn't pronounce any of them!

Only problem is that each of those silent letters changes how you voice the remaining :D

Yeah - my Dad was learning it for a while and trying to teach me bits - he got reasonably good - I'm still cr*p at it! Just too many rules

A wonderful feature, thank you! Trying to pronounce the Welsh names is bad enough but to pronounce the Gaelic...!

At least now I don't have to just pull out an OS map, point and say "that one" when asking for directions when my sister gets us lost!
