Classification of Munros

Classification of Munros

Postby Yipyipcoyote » Sun Apr 23, 2017 9:40 am

I am giving a talk on the Munros on Thursday and need to know exactly what defines a Munro. Amount of ascent on each side, distance from adjacent Munros etc. Can anyone help?

Look for Munros under Hills tab above and you will find a short history.

Thanks. I had read that page but what I was looking for was the exact details of how one hill is a Munro and another is not (apart from them being over 3000').

There is no objective criterion that distinguishes Munros from Tops. It's based on the opinion of Munro himself and of subsequent editors of the Tables.

Thanks. That's really interesting. I thought there must be some kind of rule book. I suppose it's not out of the question that the list could change again in the future.

Yes, the list changes fairly frequently, so it'll almost certainly change again in the future.

Definitely some hills I can think of which I think deserve to be Munros, and some Munros which don't!

The last subjective changes were 20 years ago - the Tables have not been republished in book form since then, and the definitive list is now on the SMC website. I suspect this makes future changes less likely, but I wouldn't rule it out!

Och after the last major re-ficker of the list in the 90s everyone got peeved and there was criticism, so I think they are letting it be for now - unless hills are remeasured and come up short..

Memorable Munros by Richard Gilbert is a good wee read.
There's a bit on Sir Hugh and then The Reverand A.E. Robertson at the start.
Kinda like his diary ( we would call it a blog on paper these days).

If you can get a hold of a copy before Thursday!

Apologies for the month-late reply.

Yes, what I said was complete rubbish. I think I must have been getting confused with the rest of the hill categories!
