Hill maps changes

Re: Hill maps changes

Aha - this explains why I'm still seeing all the summits well to the south of where they belong, long after Paul had fixed them - I thought there was just something wrong with me! Thanks for the tip for sorting it out.

(If you walk mostly in the highlands you probably don't look at the all hills map much, because it's quite cluttered, but I'm generally either looking at Wainwrights and Hewitts together, or looking for a lowland hill without caring much what type it is, so it's the map I head for.)

There's an all hills map? I've looked all over and can't find a link to it... :(

Well you learn something every day! Thanks Mal. I only ever used the main menu dropdowns, had no idea this existed.

The issue with the icon positions is a bug with different browsers and kml files, which are used for the maps on the hill pages, and the all hills map, but not your own Munro / Corbett etc. maps. The positions are correct, but the icon offsets are not being used to properly position the icon - sometimes they are ignored and so the icon is off below its true position, and then appears to move closer as you zoom in. This is an old problem - ironically some people who always saw them in the slightly the wrong positions now see everything correct for the first time :? I get them in the wrong position on some hill pages and then correct if I refresh the page (on Chrome) and more consistently correct on some other browsers.

I've put this down to completely rewrite the code and perhaps no longer use kml files, but it's likely to be some time before the icon offsets are showing correctly for everyone in every browser.

Hi Paul,

I've noticed that routes are not showing on some of the older WHRs - eg https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2812 - and in at least one case, one of two routes is showing, but not the other - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=51680.

Have you any idea what the problem is, and can it be fixed?

I'm sure I'm not the only reader that likes to follow routes when reading the reports...

Thanks.

Hi AK

I'm not sure why this is at the moment, but I'm sure it can be fixed somehow. It's on the list...

I think I've now a fix that means that all the marker icons are anchored at the correct point in the icon, both on the all hills map and on the pages for individual hills. I've loaded the fix, however it will take a week to get into your caches. If you want to see if it works straight away, refreshing the page should do it (in Chrome you have to use SHIFT + F5 to force a refresh of all the code or it won't clear).

I checked those particular ones and there was invalid data in the gpx files, so I cleaned them (one had an ampersand, the others had error messages at the bottom which were preventing them being shown using up to date code). Those reports should now be fine.

If you find more reports like this then let us know.

Another silly problem - if you're looking at one of the hill pages which has the map in the top right and a small picture beside it (everything except Munros and Corbetts, I think?), the dropdown list from 'Hills' on the menu at the top goes *behind* the map!

Thanks, this should now be fixed, hopefully not at the expense of breaking something else I've not noticed!

Umm, about the breaking something else...

The dropdown menu from your username is going behind the black text of the main menu links across the top (not very obviously, I was quite confused when I thought I'd clicked Account Settings and got the news instead).

It's fine on the forums and account settings pages, broken on the front page and the main munros page that I've tested, and this is all on the tablet (if it's not broken on the big computer I'll let you know, once I get to work).

You must be wishing you'd never started this, I really hope it starts behaving soon!

(Nearly the same on the big computer, but it jumps off to the main menu when you get down that far, so you can't get to Accounting Settings from the front page at all.)
