Posting images - removing size limits

Postby Paul Webster » Thu Oct 03, 2019 9:06 am

As Walkhighlands now has a more powerful server, we have removed the size limit when uploading images.

Images uploaded to the forum will still be reduced in size to fit the width of the forum, but there is now no need to resize before uploading - the website will do it for you. Note that you might still want to resize images to make them upload faster - but it's your choice.

We've also made changes that should fix issues with photos from certain mobile phones from appearing sideways.

Good move 👍 Should make life a bit easier. At the risk of sounding slow on the uptake (which I am  ), is there now any merit in using Flickr or other platforms to host and resize photos for walk reports first? If the site now automatically resizes photos -albeit a bit slower- I'm struggling to see the point of keeping my Flickr account. Or at least justifying payment for it. Only really use it for formatting pics for the odd trip report on WH.

I think some people use other platforms for other reasons - e.g. they can pay to store their original photos in Flickr, or display them from there on other sites. So there are reasons people might want to do that.

On the other hand keeping the photo uploaded on WH with your report ensures that the links between them can't be broken by a third party e.g. if the photo host changes the address of the photos, or disallows hotlinks.

Excellent! I've always uploaded the photos directly to WHs anyway, but not having the size limitation will save me time in not having to resize them all. Thanks!

Is there still a limit of 25 photos per post (not a problem, just wondering)?

That has changed to 40.

We probably could remove it as the photos are now only loaded as you scroll down, so there isn't the old issue of trying to load too many at once. 40 seems alot for a report though...

I agree that 40 sounds sensible. The 25 limit was rarely an issue anyway - I can only think of a single, particularly long walk where I struggled to choose fewer than 25 images.

However, I've just uploaded a new walk report and without resizing any images, I kept getting the error message: "The image you are trying to upload is invalid" (or similar).

After resizing to a width of 999 pixels (just because this was bigger than the original size limit but the number was easy to type quickly!) the photos uploaded fine. So the limit has certainly increased but there still seems to be an issue with uploading full size images?

Sorry to hear - that sounds odd - can you email me the image that won't upload? editor@walkhighlands.co.uk I'll then hopefully be able to find out the issue.

Cheers

hopefully any issues are now fixed, and you can upload photos as long as they are jpg and upto 15MB.

Hi Paul,

There still seem to be issues uploading photos over approximately 8MB to walk reports. Most of my images are smaller than this, but a few are just over.

There's no error message any more, but when the page refreshes upon uploading it wipes all of the text in the report, including all of the boxes with length / date climbed etc. Fortunately pressing the "back" button retrieves the information, but the photo still can't be uploaded unless you resize it. I've tried with multiple photos and multiple reports over the last week or so and the same thing still happens.

Any ideas?

Apologies.

Should be OK to 20MB now.
