The Lighthouse walk
Posted: Mon Jan 11, 2021 12:58 pmSince the lockdown means that you can't venture far from your home we decided to go on an extended walk along to coast. We started off at the bridge between Ferryden and Montrose, adding a few km to the walk. The path was easy enough to find, walk along the estuary towards the ocean (even if it takes you through a residential area) and dont give up. Soon enough you hit the stairs that take you up onto the dunes and on a direct-ish route towards the lighthouse. Now, in winter (or after rainfall) that part of the walk is still good to walk on, as it is paved. However, soon enough you will reach the no-longer-paved path. It meanders down towards the lighthouse, where you find info-posters about the fauna and the history of the lighthouse. Here, you hit the last proper bench for a while, so if you are planning a longer hike, take a break at this point, have a snack or drink something.
Now comes the fun part. You get to walk through cow fields (as is seemingly normal all around Scotland). Just walk through the pedestrian entrance, and try not to loose your wellingtons (trust me, it is SUPER muddy out there). If you pass by a cow, just wave from a distance and keep walking. They are used to it
Now you are on your own, you just keep walking along the fields and enjoy the brilliant view. You can essentially walk on forever, but we decided to take a short break once we passed the farm belonging to the cows. You can go all the way to the ocean, listen to the water swoosh in and out of the hollowed out cliffs, enjoy the sun (if there is any) and relax. Now, either you walk along the coastline even further and turn around at some point, or you go up the road at the farm, which takes you to Usan House (A beautiful estate at the end of the road offering a few peaks through the hedges at old vitorian houses). Here we turned right and continued for a while, on a road which would take us directly back down to Ferryden. Since we wanted to fund out what the tower to our right was, we turned left onto a road and ended up walking towards Kirkton on Craig, realising that the tower we saw was the Kirktower House. From there we turned right again, walked along another few beautiful estates, and ended up right back in Ferryden at the bridge.
