A weekend in Strathfarrar. Day three 02/05/1994
Maoile Lunndaidh and An Sithean. 25km 1380m 11.30h
The club has permission for a flexible timetable in the glen.
Another early start. Sarah`s husbands coming to collect her so just Alan and Andy with me today
Drive the glens 17 miles for the Morar dam to find i`ve pick up a bag of dirty linen instead of my boots return to the caravan for said boots to find i`m now short of petrol, cured by a visit to Beauly, then return to said dam on the wrong side of 2 hours. Though the our first time here saw rain and clag now we have sunshine an who said it doesnt shine on the rightous. Gear up and walk past the curved dam a stand of scots pine and the gates to Morar lodge. Ahead lies a white topped Molly with a crag ringed corie that awaits us. A stalkers path runs some 6k up, down and around the N side of Loch Morar for a wide inlet with ingress to Coire Fionnarach. A short walk here finds a joining of three burns. Cross the burn and a narrow path leads up W then N into Toll a` Choin corie. Steep but easy going to reach the snow level around 600m. Deep avalanche runnels here so break E for the ridge of Creag Breac. Easier at first becomes a scramble, that gains the flat upland of Maoile Lunndaidh. Now in clag, a gradual rise with a wander NW finds the cairn @1007m. Nowt to see but at least we`re here. Some debate ensued as I`d hope to add An Sidhean a Corbett to the pot. Only 4km E distant and on our way home, but a calculation of time to do agin time left swayed the vote, cause theres aye another day. Mpck. So head SW for 850m, cross the narrow strip atween Fuar Thuill Mor and Toll a`Choin, (seeing nowt) to drop S over a broad ridge to crags and clear views. Below the loch and glen of Strath Mhuilich and across Loch Morar, the long 12km ridge of Saturdays outing. A drop into the coire gives an easy route back to our start point.
Gave our thanks to the gatekeeper, a cheery guy. Collect our stuff from the van and head home, pleased with a decent haul. Oddly enough on the way home, the radio is spewing out the Stones five minute rendering of ”U can`t always git whit u want.”
