Headed up to the Hill of Rowan today but instead of following this route to the Glen Esk road, which really isn't that much fun to walk along we did an alternative route via Milton. After descending from the monument we took the track that went along passed the cottage at Westbank turning right onto another track by a fence and following that passed the woodland where there were several curlews (first time I've seen them in woodland!) to reach another track where there are several paths forking off around the fence. We took the 2nd track in the left on the other side of the fence to descend to a grassy area which probably gets a bit soggy in wet weather but today it was bone dry and relatively easy to see as it went across the grassland to a gate near Milton Cottage. Through the gate and headed across to a bridge to join the track following this back to Hill of Rowan along a much quieter road where we only saw a couple of estate vehicles. It's only marginally longer with a bit more uphill but avoids a long stretch on the road!
