As opposed to parking in Edzell and walking to Gannochy bridge we parked at the Blue Door layby (parking for c. 5 cars) and walked from there. This reduced the walk length by an estimated 4k. Much better for the small legs that we had with us.
The walk along the gorge on the way up was beautiful and we were amazed at just how long the gorge feature ran for. We have never seen anything like it. The river was low so would love to go back when it was in spate to feel, hear and see its power.
As I said we walked along the river on the way out and it was very undulating with lots of rocks and tree roots to navigate, not to mention a lot of drops on the left hand side that are not for the faint hearted. Definitely keep your dog on a lead. It made for slow going for our group.
As opposed to walking back down the road there is a path back through the trees above the river path that comes back past the tower. Bridge crossings are the same as the ones used on the way out. There are bits where the rhododendrons have grown completely across the path but easy enough to navigate round or through. This path was a little more boggy but we lucked out given how dry it has been of late.
The .gpx attachment is very approximate and only covers the way out.
