I thought I'd spotted a morning weather window for Saturday before the showers would get going. However, from Inverness to just before Torridon and from not long after dawn there was frequent drizzle and cloud capping the hills. So the hoped for clear morning wasn't going to materialise. I did ponder driving further west (Skye) in seek of drier conditions but couldn't be bothered as the western horizon wasn't exactly dazzling blue. So I decided a walk to Coire Mhic Fhearchair would do as an easy to follow route that wouldn't get too confusing if the rain came on or cloud came down to low levels.
I usually try stick to dry weather so this felt like a bit of a throw-back to pre-internet days when the weather forecast comprised the BBC sticky-on cloud, rain and sun symbols and the newspaper version of the same, days when the forecast accuracy wasn't so good anyway and you were always taking a chance and hoping for the best. Well I suppose this was a bit different in that I didn't doubt that the showers were on and off for the day.

Weather clears towards Torridon.

Actually looking not bad on Liathach and Ben Eighe.

But the cloud is oscillating around the summits.

Looks the same further north too

Beinn Dearg.

Image
I had considered a walk up Sgurr Dubh but cloudy, slippery quartzite might not have been too much fun so I'm glad at this point that I didn't go there.

Cloud starting to dip onto Liathach's northern pinnacles.

Image
Slow moving showers they (mwis) said but what happens when slow moving shower meets slow moving walker?

Image
Turns out this particular shower isn't that slow moving! But it's actually a mix of hail and light drizzle and I eventually get clear of it.

Shower curtain draped over Beinn an Eoin.

A' Mhaighdean in the distance.

Cloud below A' Mhaighdean's summit gone in seconds.

Last few steps to the Coire.

Nlot a bad view.

Image
Another sudden change; this time it is the triple buttress getting a shroud of mist.

Looking north.

East.

Clearer on the way back.

Overall not a bad walk and the showers over Beinn an Eoin were dramatic looking.

Some great atmospheric pics of a very fine place.

I've had some fun there myself in "weather"

at least you got a view of the buttress. First time i went round there - early 1960s - there was only a vestige of a path when you left Coire Dubh Mor. now i see it has been made up with steps - How things change

I did think "oh no" (or words to that effect) more or less all the way from Inverness to Torridon but the showers were quite gentle really. I was impressed by those I saw from a distance but possibly because I'm not used to seeing them these days but needs must! I might have to get used to them by the looks of the long term forecasts.

Yes, was a pretty easy walk. I think the only other time I've been was in the nineties and I didn't get a view then but I think those steps were there then too.
