This was an enjoyable and not too strenuous walk, and made a great day trip from Glasgow, with easy and frequent public transportation connections at both ends. The hike is 9 miles, but with almost no elevation change, and it's paved the whole way. There are provisions available in Kilwinning and Saltcoats (as well as Irvine and Ardrossan), and lots of good beach access in Irvine (about a 15 minute walk from the train station), Saltcoats and Ardrossan.
