Beinn Mhic-Mhonaidh from Glen Strae
Posted: Wed Aug 04, 2021 10:59 pmHad my eye on this Corbett for a while but fancied finding an alternative route up it, I'd noticed a possible route up Glen Strae coming off the old military road.
We parked up at the small car park just off the road and set off up the glen.
After a couple of km the path splits, but not before we pass a fantastic 4m deep dooking pool and waterfall, if you fancy a dook remember to pack some water shoes as the rock around the pool is too sharp to walk over barefoot.
At the split we took the right track down over the river Strae and through the forestry.
After leaving the forestry we contoured round Beinn Donachain on an old stalkers path to some old shielings at the Allt nan Giuthas.
The climb up Beinn Mhic-Mhonaidh from this point is steep but steady going, the view back down Glen Strae and Loch Awe is superb.
Within no time you're leveling out on the summit plateau at 736m, the summit at 796m is a further 1km.
The views all around are fantastic, From the Nevis range to the North to Arran in the South, Ben More on Mull to the West to Schiehallion in the East.
Our return route off the hill wall pretty much the same down to Allt nan Giuthas, however due to the low level of the River Strae we decided to round the 'Doire Nead Eóin' enclosure and cut over to the main glen track, caution is required though due to the amount of waist deep haggis traps. Once on the main glen track you should make a good pace back to the car park
