The Merrick 843m / 2766'

An enjoyable outing, with a pretty good path all the the way, (although a bit "bouldery" in places) making for a good short day. Quite a long drive out and back (120 miles) from our temporary base near Dumfries, but this walk was quite high on my "to do" list. I wasn't disappointed, it's a good hill.

We followed the usual ascent path from Glentrool, above the left bank of Buchan Burn to the Culsharg bothy and then up to the forest road, which we followed for a few metres before going up the obvious track through the forest and then up to the grassy ridge and a wall. The wall was followed up to the summit of Benyellary and then on to the summit of Merrick.

We returned the way that we had gone up. A very pleasant walk. It was also great to have some sustained sunshine, warm weather and good views for a change today!
