A wonderful tribute to a great man. As others have said, the pair of you have been such an inspiration to us all. What determination against all the odds and with such a cheerful spirit. I often think of the time you got stuck behind a mattress in a spiral staircase!

You will meet this next challenge of doing life without him with that same determination and if I lived nearer I'd be asking if I might have the honour of doing a hill or two with you! Take care. Kx

As ever, I am humbled by you both and your joint acheivements. What a wonderful report and a fitting tribute to R and how he faced the challenges of terminal illness. No less challenging for you and although you do not admit to this, your support must have there. Words are pretty inadequate in these circumstances but you are in my thoughts.

Good that he managed to stay active for so long and that he finished writing his book. An inspiration!

That's a fine tribute, Sgurr. My sincerest condolences. It does seem from your account, though, that he really did "give life his best shot." As you seem to also.

Though we've never met, like so many others on WH I've read and thoroughly enjoyed all your reports over the years, so that it feels like a loss personal to me also. It's clear from all the foregoing comments that I'm by no manner of means the only one to feel that way.

Almost 14 years of posting on and regularly visiting this site for inspiration and as an antidote to the stresses of modern day to day life and for pretty much all of that time seeing one of your trip reports flash up has been a cause for joy and optimism. I always knew what I was going to get - a heartfelt commentary on the power that walking amongst the hills can bring to us in all senses. Your name may have been attached to the reports, but Roger was almost always a central figure in the storytelling. I would very much like to think that whatever the future has to throw in my direction, I can take a leaf out of Roger’s book!

Thank you for posting this beautiful tribute. It must've been incredibly difficult to write. Even not knowing either of you, I found it a moving and inspiring portrait of a clearly remarkable man. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I truly concur and echo the words of many on here. Not much more l can add.

The Ochils are my local hills living in Falkirk. I have walked up Innerdownie and Tarmangie many times and also the others from Glendevon. I've had lovely days but the icing on the cake would have been to meet you and Roger on one of my walks.

I'm sure all these happy memories of your many days on the hills will comfort you at this difficult time. I salute you for being able to write this and imake it such a fitting tribute to a very special person.

A very honest, moving portrayal of the extraordinary determination and fortitude of both of you. Your intrepid adventures and reports over the years have been an inspiration for me, particularly now I'm slowing down at age 72. I hope I have the grit to keep going as Roger did. I was really thrilled when walking over to Usinis bothy with Danny to see you two traversing the bog on the way to Hecla. I thought ' I recognise them - they're Walkhighlands royalty!' I felt privileged that you stopped and chatted and I took a couple of photos for the record. I'd no idea that Roger wasn't well. I think it was 2017.

Thanks for the post and best wishes for the difficult time you must be going through.

Thankyou to everybody. We could easily have killed ourselves when we stupidly went up the Nantlle Ridge in poor weather in 2017, so the years from then on are a bonus. R said "Could you turn back if we had to?......Nor me. We shall just have to press on then, won't we." So I guess that is what I shall have to do
