A walk in the sun
Posted: Sun Apr 10, 2011 9:10 pmHaving moved to Scotland a little over a week ago, after years of trying to get here, it was time to climb a Munro without a 6 plus hour drive. Meall Buidhe was selected as an ideal candidate as it was close enough to Glasgow, would enable us to get back and get on with domestic duties and would also enable Brenda to get used to climbing these beauties.
After setting off around 07:00 we started at 09:30. There were a few cars already in the parking spots but little sign of anybody.
It is an easy gradient walking north from the junction of the tracks and when at the top the view across Coire Beithe towards the summit ridge was fine. A warm sun and the Meadow Pipits and Wheatears to keep us company along the way.
It was surprisingly dry underfoot as we made our way across and up to Coire nam Miseach. A few Grouse were disturbed and various odd bird noises were heard.
We then got easily to the 917 height and the bird noises became ever more insistent.
The breeze picked up a bit but helped cool us down. The summit seemed further away than expected.
Eventually we got there and had a welcome brew and food.
The walk back was essentially a repeat of the ascent bar descending directly to the track from Coire nam Miseach.
A great day, the views being obscured greatly by the mist / cloud.
I think the birds making the noises, and by the odd sighting were either Golden Plover or Dotterel. The latter being more in hope than anything.
Looking forward to more days now that Scotland is now my back yard!!
