On a short trip staying at the Glengoulandie campsite with mrs s and our 14yo. We had planned to climb Schiehallion but a lot of snow in the lead-up meant we decided to go with an alternative.

Schiehallion

We considered a few options such as Ben Vrackie but opted for Meall Tairneachan without the stretch to Farragon Hill.

We parked on the verge across from the mine road entrance and set off, passing the loading bay, a couple of skips and a two abandoned looking tracked vehicles.
The ascent on the road was straightforward and fairly easy going so we were soon rewarded with some great views back to Schiehallion, and (I think) to the Glen Lyon Munros. Everything looked so nice in the snow.

On the mine road

As the road turned right at its highest point, we could see a metal fence post, and a faint snowy path heading up through the snow covered heather which we followed up towards the trig point at the summit.

We followed our footsteps back to the road, then continued east to take a quick look at the mine - not sure if it's completely closed down but it looked like there hadn't been any activity there for a while.

The Mine

On our return down the mine road, we were passed by a land rover from Highland Safaris - as the driver stopped to say hello, it looked like his passengers had really enjoyed their trip up the mountain, although I'd always prefer to go under my own steam. It was a quick descent but still time to enjoy the views and we could see a little of Loch Tummel and beyond.
