We started this walk with the notion it was covering 3 Corbetts, wasn't until we went to update our balloons that we realised it was only 2,,plus the bump of Beinn Liath Bheag. Stlll,,it was good walk
Parking up in the Beinn Eighe car park, with the mangy stag wandering around begging for scraps. (controversial but I really do think he should be culled, very poorly looking)
Started off on the track down and past the Ling Hut, all closed up and with its usual glut of large gas bottles poorly camouflaged with a bit of net and leaves lol
- Starting at the Ling Hut
- Liathach
- Me and the BIG L
- 3 Torridon Legends
We hadn't taken our Corbett book and signal was so bad we didn't get online to check the WH route so we were combining 2 routes from a Cicerone Torridon walks book.
The path we were on runs uphill beside a waterfall before crossing the expansive lands under Sgurr Dubh and beyond. As our initial target was the Corbett Pretender, Beinn Liath Beag, we stayed on the path until under Coirre Grannda before taking a switchback and climbing up and back over to start the climb up into Lochan Uaine. There are a series of lochans here, each slightly higher than the previous one.
- First of the lochans under Uaine
We followed the ground up, just under Sgurr nan Lochan Uaine before seeing our first target off in the distance. It was a humpback of grey stoney stuff but easy enough to reach.
- A wee ptarmigan
- Our first target
- On the rocky wee knoll
After a brief stop and a munch, we doubled back then headed off up towards Sgorr nan Lochan Uaine, a short burst up and we were at the summit. easy peasy lemon squeezy.
- The lochans of Uaine under Beinn Liath Mhor
- Over to Sgurr Dubh and Beinn Eighe beyond
- WOW views
From here, Sgurr Dubh looked SOOOOOOO far away, but with legs feeling good, ribs holding out, we decided just to push on.
- All this rock gives crystal clear waters
- Deer deer deer (deer)
The North West slopes of SD are very craggy so we kept slightly east and on up through rocky ground. There is a black dome to the left, probably why the hill is called Sgurr Dubh as the rest of the hill is very grey. On popping up to the summit, John shouted "EAGLE", I didn't see it but he had just startled what he thinks was a Golden Eagle, from its perch just a few metres ahead. Watch this space.
- 3rd top,,only second Corbett though
Had another stop here for some more food and retraced our steps off the summit. The descent would be initially by our path of ascent before dropping off to the right, trying to ensure we got passed the crags. We could see the main path below us and the temptation to simply drop off did mean we maybe heading down earlier than we should so had to negotiate a couple of silly drops. Encountered our pal, Mr Eagle, making his way back to his summit eyrie.
- Big chap
Made it down and turned right on the path, heading back to the Ling Hut and the car.
Really great day out, 9.5 hrs and despite the rib issues, i felt great, no foot problems, legs felt fresh, all good,,,despite it only being 2 Corbetts and not our envisaged 3
