As the title suggests this is a gentle, scenic road walk starting and ending at Carfraemill near Lauder. I thought this might be of interest to those living in the Edinburgh area who are looking for something easy to walk on a sunny day. Suitable for those like me who are of more advanced years! or maybe even young families. It has the advantage of ending beside the Carfraemill Hotel where refreshments are available. Very quite, narrow back roads; you will be unlucky if you encounter more than a couple of vehicles. Anyway here's the route;

Park at Carfraemill car park;

Take the road just to the right of the hotel;

Continue for a mile or so and take the left turn signed to Hillhouse;

At Hillhouse take the short track to the left to avoid the house;

Continue down the hill to a bridge where a detour to the right would allow you to walk up the Hillhouse Burn valley but we go left up the hill passing a row of cottages;

The road continues on jinking right then left then downhill towards the main A68 road;

At the junction head straight over the A68 and take the small back road to Oxton;

Follow this into Oxton:

Turn left at the crossroads in the village and then right at the end of the village;

Continue on this road until you meet the A68 again; turn left over the bridge then immediately right along a tarmac track and back to the car park.........and maybe a small refreshment in the hotel!
