an evening on nevis

easter weekend and myself and mountain thyme fancied a big walk with some wild camping, we set of from glasgow on friday afternoon and left the car park at the top of glen nevis at 6ish. we set of through the gorge past steall waterfall heading for the foot of meall a bhuirich. we set up camp by the stream at 243699, no sooner had we finnished dinner the predicted rain started and seemed to last most of the night.
we set off next morning at 8 am with the steep accent of meall a bhuirich,s south west slopes, with cloud level about 600 metres there wasnt mutch to see as we arrived at the first munro of the day stob ban. theres a steep decent west before heading north to the second munro stob choire claurigh. we headed west over the ridge but were dissapointed that we couldnt see anything, visibility down to about 50 metres. we crossed a few tops reaching the third munro stob choire laoigh. a quick decent and accent over stob choire essain to the forth munro of sgurr choinnich mor. the cloud started to break and we could get a look back over the ridge we just crossed.
we were now heading for the aonach,s, so we contoured round sgurr choinnich beag, there is a path that saves you the full assent and we reached the bealach with stob coire bhealaich. there is supposed to be a path of sorts up the east side but it looked too rocky, so we headed for a notch and scrambled up slowly to gain the path over and up to aonach beag. the summit cairn just visable in the last of the snow. we dropped down to a bealach and had some grub before walking over the plateau to aonach mor. we retraced our way south before decending steeply again to the bealach with carn mor dearg.
our plan was to camp here and complete the walk tomorrow, it was 6 20pm, but mt fancied continuing and trying to get to the glen nevis campsite and a few beers tonight, tall order i thought, but we went for it, heading up the east ridge to carn mor dearg. its now 7 20 pm and all thats left is ben nevis via the arete ! we had good views as we walked over the arete but the legs were going on the final pull up to the summit of the ben. it was 9pm lots of snow still on the summit so we decided to stay on the summit overnight and head down first thing. i couldnt be bothered setting up the tent so we opted for the emergency shelter instead, absolute bliss, out of the cold wind with a wood base for sleeping we made dinner and had a few drinks contemplating the long day just had. i had a look outside before sleep to see a star filled sky and the lights of fort william and surrounding villages . but a clear sky meant a cold night and my two season bag was tested to the limit.
morning came and the clear sky went as we decended the tourist path in thick clag, a quick wash, a visit to macdonalds before watching the old firm game before heding back to glasgow. a top weekend by all accounts :D

Well done to both of you on completing that walk - it's a lot of ascent so no wonder you were feeling it :D

Guess you can do all the planning you like but you can never know exactly what the weather will deal you - great stuff 8)

rockhopper, according to naismith i think we should have done it in about 8 hours, he must walk at some speed that guy, but we had full weekend camping gear ( or one of us did !!).
chrisw, mountain thyme said she had legs of steel, think thats what makes her so slow !

Yeah been rattling back into the leg work recently. Done an easy speed round of the Aonach Eagach today including powering back to the start on foot without hitching a lift. Getting ridge fit!

Great effort and stamina you two, you are fairly getting through the Munros. Can't you start doing Corbetts and Grahams to let the rest of us mere mortals catch up? :D

Love it!
Will go there ASAP! Nice, clarifying pix of arrete.

Great fun MT's remark that she wasn't the one who wanted to go camping. I guess that's because she wasn't carrying the bedding:
